History

The Clay County Community Band was originally formed by a group of Clay High School band alumni in January, 1989 and was known as the Clay High Alumni Band. Rehearsals were held in the band room at Clay High School and were conducted by various members of the group. The turnout was low and with many of the members now living throughout Clay County, it was felt that opening up membership to the entire county would help boost participation.

Response to this endeavor resulted in a sizable increase in the group's membership. Although still small, the group was large enough to perform for the public. It was during that time that the name of the group was unofficially changed to the Clay County Community Band.

The first performance of the Clay County Community Band was the Memorial Day Festivities (May 1989) in Spring Park in Green Cove Springs, Florida, under the baton of guest conductor Mr. Buddy Ball, Band Director at Bradford County High School.

The Band continued to meet in the band room of Clay High School each week and was still without a regular conductor. In August, 1989, the Rev. Roland Castro became our first regular conductor and was with the group till 1990. Our public performances included the Labor Day Festivities (9-89), the Historic Middleburg Festival (10-89), "Christmas in the Park" in Green Cove Springs (12-89), the Christmas Concert with the Clay High Music Department, and Memorial Day activities (5-90).

The band was once again without a conductor when they resumed rehearsals in September 1990. Also, rehearsals were now being held in the band room at Green Cove Springs Elem. School. Undeterred, the band still performed for the Memorial Day Festivities (May-91) under the conduction of "the band itself."

In September 1991, rehearsals were moved to the band room at Middleburg High School under the conduction of Mr. Buddy Ball, the new band director at Middleburg High School. Due to conflicts of his schedule with his new High School activities, Mr Sam Rainey became our next regular conductor and finished the season with us in 1991.  Up until the time, the band did not have any formal structure. The group elected officers, formed by-laws and qualifications for admission to the band, and formally adopted the name Clay County Community Band

One could say that preservation is a trademark quality of the Clay County Community Band. At the close of Christmas season we were once again without a regular conductor and once again performing under the baton of our own members.

In September, 1992, we moved yet again. This time to Orange Park High School under the baton of Mr Bert Creswell, Band Director at Orange Park High School. Our programs have included benefits, fund raisers, and Festivals.

In September 2000, the band moved to its current location in the band room at Lakeside Junior High under the baton of Mr. Jim Layton, band director of Lakeside Junior High and with Mr Bob Morris as an associate conductor.

The Swing Ensemble was started in September 2001 by Burk Shields at the request of some of the band members who wanted to play a different style of music, and be able to add a new dimension to our concerts.

The Clay County Community Band officially became incorporated in the fall of 2002 which qualified the group for grants from various civic and municipal organizations. The money is used to purchase new music and equipment needed by the band.

On September 25th, 2007, the Clay County Board of County Commissioners, led by Commissioner Rob Bradley, proclaimed the Clay County Community Band as the Official Band of Clay County.
